Imagineindia continues in june at Filmoteca Española with the secreenings of films of Satyajit Ray and Shyam Benegal on the life of Satyajit Ray.

An untouchable Dukhi (an out-caste, played by Om Puri) approaches the village Brahman to request him to set an auspicious date for his daughter's upcoming wedding according to the Hindu astrology. The Brahman promises to perform the task in exchange of Dukhi slaving over household chores in return. Dukhi is weak due to the recent sickness and dies working to fulfill the brahman’s will. In this work filmed for television, the master of Indian cinema, Satyajit Ray, criticize and condemn the caste system that governs the society of his country.

It's a magnificent documentary by Satyajit Ray on T Balaswaraswati (1918-1984), the legendary Bharatanatyam Dancer. Made in 1976, when Bala was 59, this documentary traces the biography of Bala, but above all concentrates on her dance and gives us a truly unforgettable glimpse into the art of one of the greatest geniuses from India.

Benegal's film features other giants of Indian cinema like acclaimed editor Bhanudas Divkar and fellow film-maker Govind Nihalani in in-depth and intimate interviews Satyajit Ray who reminisces about how he established his own way of film-making, composing shots and scenes, handled the camera and so on. Clips from the maestro's films are sensitively played all along the documentary providing
glimpses of the genius of Satyajit Ray.
